Vamos is the capital of the district. In 1995 a group of villagers started a project to preserve the traditional way of life of Vamos. With funds from the European Union, they started a project to showcase the crafts and products of the region and restored old stone buildings using traditional materials and crafts and turned them into guest houses. Vamos is a very important village of the Apokoronas as it was the capital of the region. The village is 30km away from Chania. In the village you can find many taverns and shops.

Vamos is a semi mountainous village in the prefecture of Chania, Crete, that retains the authentic physiognomy of the traditional Cretan village.

Among the houses within the village, some old mansions, mostly of the past century, have been restored or been renovated, retaining the elements of folk and neoclassical architecture.

All Vamos is adorned with jasmines and bougainvilleas, as well as other gorgeous flowers that pop out from the balconies and courtyards.

Although Vamos is only 26 km south-east of Chania town, the village remains untouched by tourism offering the typical view of an authentic Cretan village with two-storey stone houses, paved streets, renovated mansions and an ample square with plane trees.

The village is surrounded by a wild scenery of mountains and lush greenery. In the wider region, there are many monasteries to visit, such as the Monastery of Agios Georgios, the 13th-century church of Virgin Mary and the church of Agios Nikolaos in the square of the village.
